Fast is Fun Camp Short Track Speed Skating camp is back!
The popular summer camp offers participants a mix of challenging on-ice and dryland training sessions, plus several fun activities the whole family can enjoy. So plan on making this camp one of the highlights of your summer and get a jump start on the 2010-2011 speed skating season!
All skaters will be assigned to the group requested in the registration forms. Group 1 will begin their camp on Tuesday afternoon, August 17, while Groups 2 & 3 will begin their camp Wednesday morning, August 18.
PLEASE NOTE: As this camp is the second Check Point for potential Canada Winter Games athletes, all Group 1 athletes are invited to participate in fitness testing, which runs Tuesday, August 17 from 1:15 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Canada Games Athletic Complex in Douglas Park. Group 1 athletes are asked to be at the park by 12 noon for warm-ups. Following the testing, registration and an on-ice practice will take place at the Jack Staples Arena from 3:15 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.
A complete schedule of on-ice and dryland training activities for all Groups will be provided along with your registration package and will also be available on this web page, so we recommend you check back on a regular basis.
Registration
Registration will take place on Tuesday afternoon, August 17, for Group 1 skaters and Wednesday morning, August 18, for Groups 2 & 3 skaters. Gift bags, complete with information on events and activities happening in Regina, and camp shirts will be distributed during registration.
Waiver and Medical Information
The waiver section of the registration form must be filled out and signed by a parent or guardian for skaters to participate in the camp. If you sign up for the lunch program, please identify any food allergies in the medial information section.
Requirements for Camp
Skaters/parents are reminded this is a short track camp and that all normal safety equipment is required:
While not mandatory, it is recommended skaters wear protective eyewear. Skaters should also bring along his/her own sharpening equipment, as well as rain gear, water bottles, ball cap, extra runners and socks, sun screen lotion, mosquito spray, band-aids and blister medication.

Group 1
Skaters registering for this Group will already possess advanced skating skills and will have been competing at advanced levels. They will already be regularly participating in dryland training for a minimum of three sessions a week.
Group 2
Skaters registering for this Group will have some skating experience and will have been competing at an Intermediate level. Older skaters who do not meet the Group 1 criteria or are not actively training will also be entered into this Group.
Group 3
This Group is best suited for the Peewee and Bantam skaters or others of any age who are new to the sport.
Training Information
Skaters will be on the ice two times each day except for Friday and Sunday. Remember, Group 1 skaters begin their camp on Tuesday afternoon. It is recommended these skaters do some form of dryland training prior to the camp, so you can take full advantage of the ice sessions and coaching provided.
Meals
A lunch program is available for all participants. Bagged lunches - complete with a sandwich, fruit and drink - will be provided to those who have completed the Lunch Program section of the registration form. Lunches are provided free of charge for coaches and camp volunteers.
Pizza is on the menu for Saturday’s lunch. Snacks will be available to participants throughout the camp.
Fun Stuff
While plans are still being finalized, we are lining up a number of fun activities lined up for participants and their families. We ask that you bring your swim wear and a towel, as swimming is one of the activities under consideration. Bowling is also under consideration and we will contact participants as plans are finalized.
On Friday afternoon, we will being going to the IMAX Theatre and Science Centre as a group. The cost of this outing for participants is included in their registration and extra tickets for family members can be purchased at the door. The IMAX will be showing “Wired to Win ” - a fascinating film on how the body and mind work together in an athlete.
While the IMAX and Science centre is included in your registration, there is also a special display called “Body Works ”. The cost of this unique display is $6.50, but it may be disturbing to some, as the internal parts of real bodies form part of the display.
We are planning a family barbeque Friday afternoon following our visit to the IMAX and Science Centre. There is no cost to coaches and camp volunteers and the cost for skaters is covered by your registration. Extra tickets for family members can be purchased at $7 each and payment can be included in your registration or purchased on site.
Accommodations
A block of 20 rooms has been set aside at the Travelodge Hotel (Map ) for Tuesday, Aug. 17 to Sunday, Aug. 22. Families need to specify “Fast is Fun ” camp to get room for $119.95 plus tax ($20 discount). Ph. 586-3443.
A block of 20 rooms has also been set aside for camp participants at the West Harvest Inn (Map ), just across from the Travelodge Hotel on Albert Street. Please reference group code “RSSC ” to get the special $109 plus tax room rate. Ph. 586-6755.
If camping, book your site early! Other facilities are available, but are farther out of the city. We recommend Sherwood Forest, Ph. 545-0330 or King’s Acres, Ph. 522-1619.
