Getting Started
So, you've decided to become a member of your local speed skating club. While your child is about to learn a lot on the ice, there's also a steep learning curve for many parents who have often had limited or no exposure to the sport.
What's the difference between long track and short track speed skating? How are meets run? What are the rules of racing? How do you mould a boot or sharpen skates? What tools or equipment do you need for speed skating? These are just a few of the questions facing new members, and you will find many of the answers in this area of the Saskatchewan Speed Skating web site.
A good place to get started is to read the Parents' Guide to Speed Skating , published by Speed Skating Canada. It provides a complete overview of the sport, from competitions to equipment.
